The Bauhaus design movement, founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius in Germany, emphasized the integration of art, craft, and technology. It significantly influenced modern architecture, graphic design, interior design, and industrial design. Bauhaus design is characterized by its minimalist colour palette, focusing on primary colours (red, blue, and yellow), black, white, and neutral tones, highlighting geometric shapes and functional forms.
Pipli applique work, originating from Pipli in Odisha, dates back to the 10th century and is associated with the Jagannath Temple in Puri. Initially used for religious textiles, it now includes decorative items like wall hangings and lampshades. Other regions known for applique work include Gujarat and Rajasthan. Pipli applique features vibrant designs with animal motifs like elephants, parrots, peacocks, and horses, as well as floral patterns, all hand-stitched onto contrasting fabric backgrounds.
